Bus Cancellation- Each year days may be encountered when busses must be cancelled because of inclement weather and/or poor road conditions. When bussing is cancelled, such cancellations will apply to the full day. Please listen to local radio stations for such cancellations.
School Closure- Due to the severity of the weather it may be necessary to close schools. School closure will only happen in the most extreme circumstances. It is the policy of the school board, except in the most extreme circumstances of inclement weather, to provide parents with the option to send students to school when busses are cancelled due to inclement weather.
There may be circumstances when school is cancelled during the day. This decision will be communicated to all schools as close to 11:30 AM as possible. Parents are asked to be certain to give accurate emergency caregivers’ names and telephone numbers. This information is extremely important.
Lakeview/West Chezzetcook Elementary is a feeder school for Eastern Shore District High. When Eastern Shore District High closes, so does its feeder system. (In our area school closures are more frequent due to the many country roads)
Medications for Students
If a student is taking medication that is “over the counter” or prescribed and must be administered during the school day, we can only do so if the proper medication forms have been filled out and signed by both the doctor and a parent/guardian. Medications will be secured at the school offices.
Peanut Sensitive School
Due to students with severe allergies to peanuts (anaphylaxis) our students cannot have any foods/lunches or snacks which contain peanuts or nuts. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. We also have a “No scents is good sense” policy due to high sensitivities in some students and staff member.

If you wish to contact Stock Transportation, call 481-8400
Please check with the school offices for your child’s bus route number and times of arrival of the bus for AM pickup and PM delivery.
Students and parents should review these bus rules together.
It is also advisable that parents make time at the first of the school year to introduce yourselves and your child to your bus driver.
Parents/Guardians of West Chezzetcook students who transfer busses at the Lakeview yard please note: If you wish to take them with you instead of having them board their other assigned bus, please do the following for security purposes:
Go in to the office at Lakeview and sign the book and take the signed permission slip that our secretary gives to you and present it to your child’s bus driver. This helps us to account for our students.

School Photos
This year our school photos will be taken on Sepember 15th. Our photographer will be Dean Cassivechia. Dean brings with him a wealth of experience including many years working for Jostens, specializing in group/team/individual pictures for sports clubs all over Nova Scotia and founding his own company, Photodelic.
Fundraising
Our school raises funds for The Terry Fox Marathon of Hope in late September each year.
We also raise funds in the fall for our school account through sales of chocolate bars.
We encourage our community’s support for these very worthwhile efforts!
Special Events-Parent Organized
Book Fair- In November each year we hold the Scholastic Book Fair. There will be publications which are appropriate for children of all ages.
Christmas Bazaar- Near Christmas time, parents, businesses, and community members are asked to donate any goods which are in very good/unused condition and then students go to the bazaar in class groups to shop for gifts for their family members/loved ones.
Lost and Found
Please put your child's name on clothing, back packs, boots, and shoes. There are large bins in the lobby areas of both buildings. These bins tend to fill up very quickly each term. If your child can’t find an article of clothing, it is most likely deep in the Lost and Found bin. Parents are always welcome to drop by and search for lost items.
Unclaimed items are donated to charity. Parents will be forewarned that the items will be removed.
Dress Code
Parents are asked to ensure that children are dressed appropriately for their day at school- a formal learning situation.
Clothing should be neat, clean, comfortable and proper fitting. Clothing considered too revealing, provocative or featuring inappropriate logos or wording will be addressed with the student and his/her parents.
The task of teaching and learning is challenging enough without further distraction. We seek you support in this matter.
Parents are reminded to provide indoor footwear so that our school can be a cleaner place.
Playgrounds
Our objective is to encourage safe play with a variety of things to do for all students. To this end we always try to assure that all students are under the watchful eyes of duty teachers or hired monitors. We use walkie talkies at Lakeview in order to assure full communication between all supervisors and the office.
We meet constantly to discuss any safety issues and how we can rectify them.
Everyone is reminded that students aren’t learning if they are injured or waiting for discipline/counseling at the office.
Peer Helpers/Mediators
Peer Helpers- is a support system of students who care about others and put their caring into practice. It is based on the fact that students tend to seek out peers when they are experiencing some fear, frustration or concern. These students can be tutors, buddies, orientation guides, discussion leaders, and special program Assistants, and outreach workers.
Peer Mediators- The peer mediation program believes that conflict is a natural part of life and tries to find peaceful solutions to the problem. Our mediators are trained to help people who are having a conflict, listen to each other’s points of view and find a fair solution to their problem.
Students in our Grade 4, 5 and 6 are carefully selected and trained each fall at a 2 day retreat away from school.
14 Days in December
Each year, in December, for a two-week period, our school celebrates peaceful living in schools, families and communities. School wide activities last year included:
Mrs. Nash has been the chair of this special committee and will continue in this capacity
GREEN TEAM
Our school has a very active Green Team. Students in Gr.4-6 are responsible for coordinating the environmental Learners in Action projects and the SEEDS Program (Society of Environment and Energy Development Studies).
We have recently achieved Green School status by completing 100 environmental projects and are working toward Jade Level which will require an additional 150 projects.
Students on the team also collect reusable paper, compost, and redeemable juice containers and cans. Meetings are held every two weeks during which nominations for the “Greenkeeper Award” are voted upon and future environmental projects are discussed. New members of the Green Team are asked to complete one simple environmental project and submit a brief report of it to the existing Green Team.
Technology Team
Students who enjoy working with computers, sound equipment, video equipment and digital photography will be invited to become part of this special team to train and help around our school in everything from Power Point presentations, to website work, to making movies.

Parent School Association
Our PSA is a group which is made up of the chairs of many volunteer committees in our school, of school staff members, and parent members.
This association meets each month. The purpose is to share reports of committee progress and raise attention of everyone to developments around projects.
Also, the PSA reviews any funding requests from the school and approves spending within budgets.
School Advisory Council
The SAC is a legally recognized body comprised of the principal, teachers, support staff, parents, and community members working together in an advisory capacity to aid in increasing the quality of education within the school.
The fundamental purpose of the SAC is to ensure that all students receive the best learning opportunities. As a committee the SAC is engaged in problem solving (i.e. Site Planning, policy making, and disciplinary decisions) and shared decision-making.
There is no fundraising involved.
Please call us at school if you are interested in becoming involved with our School Advisory Council.
Library
The library is operated by a very faithful group of volunteers who read to classes, decorate for seasonal celebrations, keep all books catalogued and organized. We constantly add new books to both libraries which are purchased with funds raised at school. Students may sign out books at their regular library classes. Parent volunteers are most welcome to join this committee.
Cafeteria
We have a full service cafeteria at Lakeview which features both recess snacks and nutritious lunches with daily specials. Students can order on class orders at the beginning of the school day. Orders are then prepared for pickup for both recess and lunch.
Our menu will be available for September and each household will receive a copy for your reference and use throughout the school year.
Parent volunteers are always welcome to make use of this convenient service too.
Healthy Foods Committee
This group meets on a monthly basis and is made up of school staff, parents, and community members with expertise in nutrition.
The group has acted in an advisory capacity to the school with all matters regarding proper nutrition.
This group has applied for and received grant money from the local health board to fund a program called “Snacks n’ Facts”. The purpose of this new program is to introduce our students to healthy snacks on a monthly basis.
Presently, the committee is exploring the possibility of having some nourishing quick grab and eats food for students who may have missed breakfast for any variety of reasons.
Health Committee
Our health committee is formed in order to perform regular head checks on all of our students. Because of these dedicated individuals and the support of our parents, head lice is not a nuisance at our school.
Special Events- Staff Organized
Each year, there are many special events at our school:
Monthly Assemblies- These assemblies are held at both buildings and highlight student accomplishments in all classes.

The main purpose of Physical Education at Lakeview/West Chezzetcook is to expose the students to a range of activities that will develop physical, social/emotional and intellectual growth. Our goal is to assist the students in developing and maintaining an adequate fitness level, to assist in developing efficient and effective motor skills so they can apply these skills to many activities and to have all students participate and appreciate physical activity.

The Music Program is offered to all classes twice during the 6-day cycle. Each class is 30 minutes in length. The music curriculum is based on a singing program with emphasis on moving and creating to music, reading and writing rhythms/melodies and playing various rhythmic and melodic instruments. Every class has an opportunity to sing and perform for the community by way of the Christmas Concert held every year.
Instruments
In grade 4, students will begin to learn how to play the recorder. After Christmas, they will receive their recorders which they purchase and are expected to bring both a duotang and recorder to each music class. Instruction in recorder continues in grade 5 with the same expectations.
In grade 6, students have the opportunity to play in the school band where they will learn different instruments. At the end of grade 5, the band teacher will meet and discuss various instruments with the students in anticipation for the grade 6 year.
Choir
Choir is an extracurricular activity and is offered to students in grade 4, 5 and 6 who enjoy singing and performing! The choir meets once a week and practices at lunch hour. We perform at the Remembrance Day Assembly, Christmas concerts, and Open houses and usually have a performance in the spring of the year. The choir, in the past, has performed at various community venues such as caroling at the Superstore, hockey games and singing for the seniors.

Math Initiative
The Halifax Regional School Board provided support to classroom teachers in providing professional development in the area of Mathematics. The board’s representative, Robin Harris provided monthly after school sessions for the staff from October through March in curriculum areas they identified. Ms. Harris also conducted ˝ day in-service sessions for teachers at each grade level in February and March.
